Happiness Starts With You

Let me tell you something I’ve learned over the years—something I wish someone had told me when I was younger.

I came across a post that asked, “How can a woman not know if her partner is happy?” And while I understand the question, it made me think. See, there’s a quote I heard a long time ago that stuck with me:
“I don’t know how to make you happy, so I’m going to make myself happy—and maybe, just maybe, that’ll bring you some happiness too.”

Now doesn’t that make more sense?

We spend so much of our lives trying to take care of everyone else—our partners, our kids, our friends. We put ourselves on the back burner thinking, “If they’re okay, I’ll be okay.” But what I’ve learned is this: you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Real happiness? It doesn’t come from somebody else. It’s something you’ve got to find within yourself. Someone might make you smile or feel good for a while, but lasting joy—that deep, steady peace—only comes when you know who you are and what makes you happy.

And let me say this loud and clear:
No matter where you go or who you’re with, you always take you with you.
So make sure you like the person you’re bringing along.
Make sure she’s cared for. Make sure she’s heard.

You were born with a light inside you. Let it shine. Stop waiting for someone else to flip the switch. You’ve got the power in your own hands.

So today, do something—just one little thing—that makes you feel good. Not for anybody else. Just for you.

Because that’s where happiness begins—with you, and nobody else.
